The Amazon Climate Pledge

The Amazon Climate Pledge, initiated by Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos in September 2019, is a commitment made by the world’s largest online retailer to combat climate change. The pledge aims to reduce Amazon’s carbon footprint and achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040, a decade ahead of the Paris Agreement’s goal, while also encouraging other companies to join its efforts to combat climate change.

As part of the Climate Pledge, Amazon has ordered 100,000 electric delivery vans from Rivian, a startup company in which Amazon has invested, and plans to transition to 100% renewable energy by 2025. Additionally, Amazon has pledged to invest $100 million in reforestation projects around the world.

Since its launch, more than 100 other companies have signed onto the Climate Pledge, including IBM, Unilever, Boss and Verizon. The pledge is also known as the Amazon Climate Pledge, and those who have joined are referred to as Climate Pledge Friendly companies. The pledge is also sometimes referred to as the Net Zero Pledge, Climate Change Pledge, AWS Climate Pledge, or French Business Climate Pledge, depending on the context.
